Time Zone Used Throughout the Plan: CHARLIE

1. SITUATION
a. Enemy Forces. Insurgent forces have established a stronghold north of Nasiriyah, centered in the village of Al-Hazred. Estimates place a platoon-sized force controlling the village, although an unknown number of insurgents are spread through the surrounding countryside. The enemy forces are equipped with small-arms, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, light machine guns and are known to be equipped with man-portable SAMs. Weapon caches have been established in the area and the insurgency appears to be building up Al-Hazred as an operational base from which to launch attacks south into Nasiriyah.
b. Terrain. Al-Hazred rests in a fertile region of the Tigris-Euphrates valley. Terrain will be a combination of arid terrain in elevated and built-up areas while lower-lying regions closer to water sources may have significant vegetation.
c. Friendly Forces. 4th and 5th Battalions of the 502d Infantry will remain in Nasiriyah to the south. A battalion of 155 SP Howitzers from 3rd Armored Division has been detached to the 502d Infantry Regiment in Nasiriyah. 2nd ACR has established a screen 45km north of Al-Hazred to deter insurgent forces from withdrawing to the north.
d. Attachments and Detachments. A Blackwater team has been contracted to perform security tasks within the AO. Bravo Company of the 213th Royal Parachute Brigade his been attached to 6/502d and will be participating in ground operations.

2. MISSION
6/502d Infantry will attack and seize the village of Al-Hazred NLT 1100C on 210106 to liberate the village from insurgent control and to establish a local base of operations.

3. EXECUTION
a. Concept of Operations. 6-502d will stage a ground assault into Al-Hazred with the attack to commence NLT 1100C 210106. Troops will travel by convey to within 1/2 mile of the village then enter on foot. Due to the large number of civilian personnel in the village, no advance artillery preparation is possible. A large number of man-portable SAMs have been identified in and around the village. Air support will be reserved only for emergency situations until greater ground security can be established. Once insurgent military forces have been driven from the village of Al-Hazred, 6-502d will establish a command post and commence security operations with checkpoints and patrols to safeguard the village. Al-Hazred is key terrain for controlling the surrounding countryside. Insurgent forces will certainly try to infiltrate and recapture the village. The village should be searched for caches of weapons, supplies and explosives used by the insurgents and security patrols alert to capturing or eliminating known insurgent leaders identified by Division G2. 6-502d will be called upon to mount military operations from Al-Hazred, defend the village and protect the civilian population. Winning the trust and respect of the civilian population will be instrumental in long term success in the region.
b. Combat Service Support. Per SOP with following amendments:
(1) Supply. A regimental supply and service depot will be established west of Al-Hazred and outside of the primary region of insurgent control. 6-502d will be expected to bring a basic re-supply load of ammunition, water and rations to the Al-Hazred CP, although long term re-supply needs will be serviced through the regimental depot.
(2) Transportation.
(a) Main Supply Route Blue extends due eastward from the regimental depot to Al-Hazred.
(b) Alternate supply route is south of MSR Blue along E/W rail-line.
(c) Local rail line extends from regimental depot to southern edge of Al-Hazred before reached junction to the south-east of village. Rail has suffered extensive damage from acts of sabotage and local forces will be working to repair rail-lines once control of area has been re-established.
(d) Heavy vegetation from the Tigris-Euphrates valley to north and east of village move primary helicopter LZ to an arid region immediately to the west of Al-Hazred.
(e) Requests for convoy re-supply may be passed through regimental S4. Air-drop and air re-supply requests are likely to be denied until greater ground control is achieved to eliminate threat of SAMs.
(3) Medical Services. Once established, 6-502d CP in Al-Hazred will be serve as casualty collection point with triage and services provided by unit medical personnel. Critical injuries and KIAs will be evacuated to regimental HQ via land or air transport. Medical assistance needs for refugees and civilians casualties to be provided by unit medical personnel with advanced life-saving support handled at regimental HQ.
(4) Personnel Service Support. Unit replacements to be processed through regimental S1. Special rest, recreation and additional administrative facilities are available at regimental HQ and ground commanders will rotate troops back to rear echelons for R&R as circumstances dictate.
(5) Miscellaneous. Liaison with civil authorities in Al-Hazred to be handled by unit leaders.
