The United States has become concerned with the growing power of Peronist authoritarian groups in Argentina. The elections coming up there is fear that the country could return to its iron fisted rule. The consequences have the potential to destabilize the region and if the country was to switch to a more expansionist policy few countries in the region would be able to resist.
The U.S. has thrown its support behind Ramon Castillo, a leading reformist candidate, in the upcoming election. Castillo's pro- U.S./U.K. and wishes to enter the larger world stage as a powerful but benevolent progressive nation. The opposition is the General Confederation of Labor led my Jorge Franco. Franco was a Peron strong man who served nearly 15 yrs in prison for crimes committed under the Peron Government. While not as popular as Castillo he does project an image of strength and promises the same desire for a larger part on the world stage. Where he differs from Castillo is that he wants it by force. He proclaims a manifest destiny for all of South America.
The CIA has been watching the situation closely but fears that Franco may not allow the election to occur. His former ties to the military make the potential for a coup a very real threat. The CIA has even linked Franco to extremist groups around the world. It is believed that Franco's former military unit, the 601 Air Assault Battalion, is gearing up for a possible assault on the Buenos Aires.
Fears grow as an agent in Curuzu Cuatia, Argentina disappears. The town is near an unruly region at convergence of Argentina-Brazil-Paraguay borders is locus of money laundering, smuggling, arms and illegal narcotics trafficking, and fundraising for extremist organizations; uncontested dispute between Brazil and Uruguay over Braziliera Island in the Quarai/Cuareim River leaves the tripoint with Argentina in question. Reports from the agent report the presence of the 601 Air assault Battalion in the area. This could be a staging ground for a much larger move by Franco.
In a surprise move the Russian Government approached the U.S. with critical information on the whereabouts of the missing agent as well as Intel on the potential coup. So now a joint U.S./Russian Federation team is operating with permission from a staging area in Bella Union Uruguay.
In a country ruled for years by Military Juntas, Argentina has become a haven for drug lords and terrorists. In the war on terror, it is a frontline of shadows and plausible deniability Allies become enemies and the past threatens the future. Now within the barrios and deep in the jungles, a threat grows that was forged in the fires of World War II and will threaten the entire world.
