"My fellow citizens, at this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger. On my orders, coalition forces have begun striking selected targets of military importance to undermine Saddam Hussein's ability to wage war. These are opening stages of what will be a broad and concerted campaign. More than 35 countries are giving crucial support -- from the use of naval and air bases, to help with intelligence and logistics, to the deployment of combat units. Every nation in this coalition has chosen to bear the duty and share the honor of serving in our common defense."
--President George Bush
As the storm gathers, both sides brace for war. Over a decade has passed since this tempest has swept the region and again the thunder rumbles on the desert horizon. Soldiers hunker down in their foxholes and bunkers awaiting the command that will unleash this anger upon the world. At this moment there are no differences between men. Each is equal in their fear and their desire to simply go home.
The storm is unleashed as jets rain lightning down upon the country. The time of shock and awe begins and Babylon prepares for the coming tribulation.
A city falls that has seen more history then any other. Modern soldiers walk her sand-filled ancient streets. History began here, and here it continues today as one regime falls and another grows. While nations argue, one thing remains the same. A Soldier's boots walk the ground and give strength to the might of peoples beliefs.
While the original storm has passed, another begins to grow. It can be heard long before it reaches the dusty streets and ancient mosques. Its name is carried by many on their lips and it speaks of fear. Its power can strip the flesh from a man's bones and tear at his heart. It has the power not only to destroy all in its path but to obliterate a man's soul.
In a moment it is unleashed. Its fury rages. Those who have survived in the past worry that this will be the one that takes them to their final destination. The soldiers stuck in their foxholes hiding from the wind and sand think of what the old men in the village called it "Shamal", or as your interrupter told you, "Sandstorm".
Operation Sandstorm Game Details
The game will be divided into two 3-hour blocks of game play, separated with a short lunch break. Game play will be continuous from 11am until approximately 2pm. Game play resumes from 3pm until approximately 6pm. We may extend the afternoon time block to four hours.
Game play is continuous. Managing squad and platoon rest with mission needs will be an important job for unit leaders. Once the insurgent stronghold in Al-Hazred has been destroyed, the occupation immediately begins. Blue commanders will be expected to establish checkpoints and security patrols in and around the village. Even if the bulk of Blue force leaves the field to rest, a minimum of two squads should be left to guard the village and control access to Al-Hazred. Leaving checkpoints unattended will only invite the insurgents to re-establish themselves in the village or leave the door open for them to smuggle in weapons and explosives into the heart of the Blue Zone of control.
There will be a large civilian population in the village, including merchants selling beverages, food and other goods throughout the day. Players are welcome to buy snacks and drinks from the villagers. In fact, the more positive interaction with the villagers the better. Winning the hearts and minds will be critical. Villagers may be initially unsure of the US presence and the Blue Forces should establish rapport with the civilian population and help them understand that the US is here to enable them a new opportunity at self-rule from under the thumb of Saddam and the Ba'ath party. The Blue Forces may not be able to please all the villagers all the time. Checkpoints into the village will be a necessity to maintain security until the insurgent threat is eliminated and weapon caches are likely to have been hidden in the village. The professionalism and respect shown to the civilian population will make a huge impact on swaying the civilian population to support the US or drive more of them into fighting for the insurgency and working against the American military.
During the game-play blocks, Frag Orders will periodically be delivered to the Blue Command Post in Al-Hazred. Blue commanders will make decisions on how many squads to dispatch to missions. Between checkpoints, security patrols and frag orders... several small missions may be running simultaneously. Once the insurgents have been driven from their stronghold and into hiding, expect them to be operating in small teams. Be alert to ambushes, suicide bombs, roadside bombs, attempts to smuggle weapons into the village to prepare for major attacks. Blue forces should travel in teams. Don't risk capture or murder by insurgents by wandering around the village on your own... always travel in small teams.
In addition to small frag missions to deal with insurgent camps or to track down known insurgent leaders, be prepared to react at anytime to an insurgent threat. How well Blue Forces can balance village security with not alienating the civilian population will be a major factor in how dangerous the insurgents will be. Prepare to deal with the media as international news crews come into the area to report on the war. Expect the challenge of Iraqi election day and the extensive security and counter-insurgency tasks preparing for the elections.
